Massage therapists work in environments where they may interact with clients experiencing a wide range of circumstances, making awareness of human trafficking an important component of professional education and client safety.
This course provides massage therapists with foundational knowledge about human trafficking, including common forms of trafficking, potential indicators of exploitation, and circumstances that may raise concern. Students will learn how trafficking can affect individuals and how certain signs may present during a massage therapy appointment.
Through real-world scenarios and practical examples, therapists will learn how to observe concerning behaviors without making assumptions, communicate appropriately, and respond in a way that prioritizes safety. The course also addresses professional boundaries, documentation, workplace policies, and the importance of following appropriate reporting and referral procedures.
Special emphasis is placed on recognizing potential indicators without attempting to investigate or confront suspected traffickers. Students will learn the importance of staying within their professional scope of practice and following applicable laws, regulations, and established protocols.
By the end of the course, students will have greater awareness of human trafficking and the confidence to recognize potential warning signs and respond appropriately and professionally.
